RHINOPLASTY SURGERY

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury or help to relieve certain breathing problems.

RHINOPLASTY / NOSE SURGERY:
Length of the procedure:  2 hrs
Type of anesthesia: general
Hospital staying: 4 to 6 hrs
Postoperative stay in Costa Rica: 7 to 10 days

Depending in the needs of the patient, the nose cartilage and bone are modified. A bump can be reduced or eliminated, the sides of the nose can be brought closer together to make the nose narrower. The tip can be lifted and improved in appearance and definition.

Most of the operation is performed by making only small incisions inside the nostrils. Doctor Chavarria performs this procedure using general anesthetic, although there may be cases in which a local anesthesia is used. This depends on the degree of the procedure and on what you and the doctor prefer.

A rhinoplasty treatment usually takes 1-2 hours in total, though more complex surgeries can take longer. During the process, the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting structure of cartilage and bone. Dr. Chavarría Leon then proceeds to sculpt this framework to the desired shape. The character of the sculpting will depend on the patient’s needs and wants, as well as on the problem he/she presents. The doctor’s preferred technique will also affect the process. Once this part of the operation is done, the skin is placed back and re-draped over the area.

Generally, to ensure no noticeable scarring, incisions are made inside the nose. However, an “open” method may be preffered, especially in more difficult scenarios. In these cases, an incision is usually made across the columella (the vertical strip of tissue which separates the nostrils).

When the nose surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or a soft plastic splint also may be placed inside your nostrils to stabilize the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages.

After a rhinoplasty, Dr. Chavarria usually recommends a recovery period of at least 8 days that you will have to spend in Costa Rica. Keep in mind that the time you spend in the country can be expanded to your needs especially if you wish to go on a little vacation before having surgical treatment performed and take the opportunity to see some of our natural wonders.

Remember that the price of a rhinoplasty treatment varies from patient to patient thus, an initial consultation with Dr. Chavarría is essential before deciding if you will benefit from this plastic surgery.
